Jewelry designing has been classified as functional art, which is considered art that can be worn. The idea of designing jewelry was already present in civilization prior to the first century AD. Jewelry was often crafted from 24K gold because it was simply more accessible than silver. Much early jewelry was crafted for various rulers due to its high value and precious components. When designing jewelry, the designer needs to know what he or she is looking for in the design. While many types of jewelry cannot be made without professional tools, other kinds can easily be designed at home by the amateur jewelry crafting enthusiast. Beading, wire work or wire wrapping, and weaving, such as with hemp, can all be used to create homemade jewelry designs.
