Chainmail

The most well known type of chainmail is that of European decent. It is believed that the alternating rows and columns of European mail were invented by the Celts around in 400 BC. Very soon after that, it was adopted as blackline armor (Lorica Hamata). This type of chainmail has been in use ever since then, and it is still widely used in today's day and age.

Chainmail is now used not only for actual armor, but has spawned a thriving genre of jewelry design. These pieces of jewelry are formed out of interlocking links in various patterns and are often extremely elegant and handcrafted. This jewelry can be found in stores online and, very often, in extensive booths at any Renaissance Fair.

One very attractive piece of chainmail jewelry is the barefoot sandal. It actually looks like you are wearing a sandal, but there is nothing on the sole of the foot. It's simply jewelry. It looks very elegant and exotic at the same time. They are created from steel or brass wire. They are then accented by the larger, gunmetal rings. A set of these goes for $48.00. They can also be sold singularly, but most often they are sold in pairs. Chainmail can be used to create many other types of unusual jewelry, besides the usual necklaces, earrings, and anklets. It is also used to make headpieces, arm jewelry, and belly dancing belts that are unparalleled in exotic elegance.
